When Holding It All Together Starts Holding You Back
Because even the strongest women reach a point
where pushing through stops working.

About fifteen years ago, I was the woman everyone thought was strong.
On the outside, I looked like I was holding it all together.
But inside—I was breaking.

 

My nineteen-year-old daughter was addicted to heroin and facing six years in prison.
After eleven years of marriage, I was going through another divorce.
Every part of me was trying to stay in control—to hold everyone else together.
But my body had other plans.

What I understand now, looking back, is that my daughter’s addiction wasn’t just about the drugs.
It was about her nervous system—one that had been dysregulated since early childhood.

She had lived through physical and sexual trauma, a father struggling with severe substance use disorder,
and a mother—me—who was emotionally shut down, bracing through my own survival state.

Her need to escape was her body’s way of trying to find relief in a system that never felt safe.
And my inability to stay emotionally present with her wasn’t a lack of love.
It was a sign that my own nervous system was running on fumes—frozen, guarded, and on autopilot.

 

For years, I was parenting, partnering, and performing through a dysregulated nervous system—and it had consequences on my health, my marriage, and my children.There came a point when I almost gave up.

 

Not because I didn’t care, but because I was completely depleted.s completely depleted.

 

I couldn’t sleep. My chest was tight.
I was self-medicating with red wine every night just to calm down—foggy, exhausted, and desperate for relief.
That wasn’t weakness.
That was my nervous system doing what it was wired to do: protect me.

 

What I didn’t know then is that the nervous system decides—before thought—
whether we can engage or if we need to guard.
And that decision determines which part of the brain is running the show.

When we’re in survival, the thinking brain goes offline.


And no amount of mindset work, strategy, or willpower can override a body that still feels under threat.


That’s not failure—it’s physiology.

 

Over the past decade of working with families, leaders, and individuals in crisis,
I’ve seen that same pattern everywhere.
No matter how much therapy, strategy, or willpower someone has—
if the body is still bracing, the mind can’t stay clear.

 

But when the body finds ease, everything shifts.

The brain comes back online.
Focus returns. Compassion returns. Self-trust returns.

 

That’s the foundation of my work today—
helping people rebuild the alliance between body and brain
so they can lead, love, and live from steadiness instead of survival.
